About the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society
A tradition since 1973.
On May 19, 1973, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's former surgical residents gathered to honor Dr. Harwell Wilson. This day of appreciation was attended by surgical leaders from across the country. Nearly 200 surgical residents and faculty attended the first day of appreciation. The day included scientific presentations, a luncheon, and a dinner in Dr. Wilson's honor.

Over the years, this day of appreciation has evolved. Today, the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society still remembers Dr. Wilson and all of his achievements. This annual meeting is a time for current residents to present their research results at the Scientific Session which concludes with a distinguished visiting professor lecture. In the evening, the Department of Surgery comes together for a banquet to celebrate the graduating Chief Residents and the accomplishments of the UTHSC Department of Surgery. The following day, a golf tournament that benefits the HWSS concludes the celebration.
